FULL-LENGTH PLAYS

~~Renting monologues and plays~~

There is a delicate balance between community theatre, school, semi- professional, and professional.  It often pays to read a portion of the play to see if it fits into your needs.  After doing so, it is customary, and even legally required to honor copyright laws and pay the author a royalty for the use of his material.

Sometimes the line is a little blurry, and that might necessitate a conversation between the author and the theatre.  You’ll find that we’re very good at listening, and that we do not “hard-line” anything.  Our royalty rates are completely in keeping with the accepted norm, no more.

Occasionally a theatre or school invites the playwright to attend the opening performance or even lend his thoughts during rehearsal.  We are open to this, if schedules and budgets allow.

Royalty rates for monologues, ten-minute plays, one-act plays, and full-length plays will vary according to use, venue and the length of the play.

If you have further questions, I recommend emailing me specifically, and I’ll respond asap.  Please put PLAY INQUIRY in the subject line, so that my mail program does not think your note is spam.

Please email me at:  info@garyyoungunlimited dot com

For your convenience, I have a toll-free phone number as well, but it is hard to catch me:  866-238-2840.

SAY GOODNIGHT

Dramedy / two men

A father and son come to grips with father/son communication, emotional conflicts, mortality, and messy eating.  Dad has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, inoperable, and has lost the power to speak.  He and his son journey, with permission, to a park bench across from the hospital.  With Dad in his robe, his son hands him one of his favorite cigars, which he never lights. Upon receiving the cigar, he suddenly becomes loquacious, and delivers what he expects will be his last, or one of his last opportunities to make things right between the two, and impart a little mature perspective to his genetically immature son.  He dons the personality of a Borsht Belt comedian after receiving the cigar, and launches the diatribe.  His son reacts minimally, and we see at the end that he has not understood anything that Dad has said, although he does not tell Dad.  But he understands Dad’s situation and body language, and a few words here and there, plus Dad’s difficulty with emotion and the effort and love that went into this, and gets the gist.

REHEARSING DUTCHMAN

Comedy / 2 men, 2 women

A rehearsal of a play within a rehearsal of a play, within a rehearsal of a play, within a rehearsal of a play, oh yes, and one more rehearsal…or more.  Four people stuck in a never-ending sequence of perpetual rehearsals.  Many of us can identify with this feeling…

LEFTOVERS

Comedy-drama / 1 man, 1 woman

Michael Corleone, Sollozzo, and the Police Captain McCluskey…well, actually the waiter that served them that night; he’s a person too!  The waiter is actually co-owner of a “Ma ‘n Pa” Italian restaurant, frequented by underworld types, as well as neighborhood folk. Giuseppi has witnessed the killing (as was presented in the movie, Godfather). He stumbles his way into the Kitchen to find ——, the other co-owner.  She has not heard the commotion because of the noise in the kitchen.  She sees Guiseppi’s face and immediately knows that something is terribly wrong.  As they cower together, not knowing what to do, when to do it, how to do it, if the coast is clear, if they are in danger, they make a decision about the rest of their lives.

Excerpt from LEFTOVERS

LEAP

Comedy / 2 women, 1 man

Comedy-drama / 1 man, 2 women

Many of us know a person who was born on Leap Day, February 29.  Technically, this person only ages one year for every four.  Well, usually it’s only technical.  In this case, it’s literal, and she has had to make some unusual adjustments because of that.  She is celebrating her 21st birthday, which normally would be her 84th. And she looks young for her age – young for 21, that is.

I’M A SHOE by Gary Young (one-act version)

On a cruise ship, the wrong person dies, the wrong person takes charge, the wrong jewels are stolen, and the wrong person has to disappear. A family business – stealing from the rich and, well, keeping it. Dad is the brains behind the schemes, and this one is a dilly.  The family boards a cruise ship prior to its departure, while many of the staterooms are more vulnerable.  Not without its dangers, the scheme could be brilliant, since the family would be ashore and the boat would sail before any real loss could be perceived, and after the time when anything could be done about it…in theory.  A scheme is only as good as the schemer and the ones carrying out the scheme, plus the unforeseen variables – such as the sudden death of the brains of the outfit.  Dad dies after the plunder and before the get-away.  The problem becomes: what to do with dad and how to figure out what to do with the goods that the family has stolen from a Mafia Kingpin in the stateroom adjacent to their staging area. And just what is in that steamer chest?

BAGELS AND LOCKS by Gary Young

It’s just your typical octogenarian serial killer comedy. Rose and Jake annoy each other terribly, but Jake would kill for Rose and Rose would kill for Jake.  In fact, they do. But it’s for a reason.  Their daughter has been abducted by a cult and they are seeking revenge.  They are more than a little confused, so the revenge gets a little strange.  But they mean well…

INTERRUPTIONSa life, a death, pizza, dancing and Murphy’s Law

A serio-comic look at the plight of Bob, a recent young widower, dealing with the death and celestial presence of his beloved wife, Linda. He is aided unexpectedly by Zolton, a loony pizza salesman (or is he?) and Nancy, his amorous and concerned sister-in-law. Further attempts to advance his road to recovery are offered by the slightly askew chums at his weekly support group. Bob is given “permission” to grieve, and therefore, get well, as he maneuvers through a succession of “Murphy’s Laws.”

(Full-length: 2:15 with intermission)

Comic drama

3 men, 6 women (with doubling)

ON HOLD: The MYTH of Male Maturity

A new one-person play, written and originally performed by Gary Young.

Is there such a thing as male maturity? Can you sum up a life and fix everything with one phone call to a pop psychologist? Five characters tackle this while on the telephone, on hold, waiting to speak to a radio pop-psychologist. We gather a bit of insight and have some fun as we nurture this man through his own “stuff.”

Full length (75 minutes)

One-person (solo) show

ON HOLD: the MYTH of Male Maturity

Maturity is not earned.  It is not genetically pre-determined.  It is not a product of upbringing or environment.  In fact, as far as guys are concerned, it isn’t anything at all.  At least, it’s not something to get in the way of having a good time.  We’re here for a reason…or not…but regardless, there are a few basic facts that you can take to the bank:

A nose is a very convenient place to park a finger.  But never do that in traffic while you’re text messaging.

Most food can be eaten if dropped on the floor and retrieved within 5 seconds (long count).  Blowing off the floor stuff is optional.

If your father seems mature, it’s because he needs to be that way in front of you.  But it’s better if he’s not.

Your experiences do matter.  They inform you.  But they don’t have to ruin your fun.  Take for example…well, that’s what the play is about.

Performance dates in Los Angeles have not been set yet, but when they are set, this website will carry discount tickets for the limited run.
