SAY GOODNIGHT

A father and son come to grips with father/son communication, emotional conflicts, mortality, and messy eating.  Dad has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, inoperable, and has lost the power to speak.  He and his son journey, with permission, to a park bench across from the hospital.  With Dad in his robe, his son hands him one of his favorite cigars, which he never lights. Upon receiving the cigar, he suddenly becomes loquacious, and delivers what he expects will be his last, or one of his last opportunities to make things right between the two, and impart a little mature perspective to his genetically immature son.  He dons the personality of a Borsht Belt comedian after receiving the cigar, and launches the diatribe.  His son reacts minimally, and we see at the end that he has not understood anything that Dad has said, although he does not tell Dad.  But he understands Dad’s situation and body language, and a few words here and there, plus Dad’s difficulty with emotion and the effort and love that went into this, and gets the gist.

REHEARSING DUTCHMAN

A rehearsal of a play within a rehearsal of a play, within a rehearsal of a play, within a rehearsal of a play, oh yes, and one more rehearsal…or more.  Four people stuck in a never-ending sequence of perpetual rehearsals.  Many of us can identify with this feeling…

LEFTOVERS

Michael Corleone, Sollozzo, and the Police Captain McCluskey…well, actually the waiter that served them that night; he’s a person too!  The waiter is actually co-owner of a “Ma ‘n Pa” Italian restaurant, frequented by underworld types, as well as neighborhood folk. Giuseppi has witnessed the killing (as was presented in the movie, Godfather). He stumbles his way into the Kitchen to find ——, the other co-owner.  She has not heard the commotion because of the noise in the kitchen.  She sees Guiseppi’s face and immediately knows that something is terribly wrong.  As they cower together, not knowing what to do, when to do it, how to do it, if the coast is clear, if they are in danger, they make a decision about the rest of their lives.

Excerpt from LEFTOVERS

SIG ALERT

On the highway to Las Vegas. An unusual roadblock, causes surprising interactions.

LEAP

Comedy / 2 women, 1 man

Many of us know a person who was born on Leap Day, February 29.  Technically, this person only ages one year for every four.  Well, usually it’s only technical.  In this case, it’s literal, and she has had to make some unusual adjustments because of that.  She is celebrating her 21st birthday, which normally would be her 84th. And she looks young for her age – young for 21, that is.

THE TENOR

Drama / 2 men

A wasteland full of riches just out of reach.

Excerpt from THE TENOR

TIME’S UP

In an Egyptian tomb. Whom do you expect to meet in such a place? Think again.

LEFT FIELD

The Cubs and the Red Socks pair off in the ultimate world series. What could go wrong? It does.

Excerpt from LEFT FIELD

RED HEAD

He wants to tell her.  She wants to know. Allergies aside, will they ever communicate?  It’s all about men and women and how it is so hard to communicate.  This particular couple find their common ground, however, and it becomes possible by embracing their immaturity.

Excerpt from RED HEAD

SO WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM?

Telling it all.  Maybe more than all.  Maybe nothing at all.  It’s analysis, after all…

I’M A SHOE by Gary Young (one-act version)

On a cruise ship, the wrong person dies, the wrong person takes charge, the wrong jewels are stolen, and the wrong person has to disappear. A family business – stealing from the rich and, well, keeping it. Dad is the brains behind the schemes, and this one is a dilly.  The family boards a cruise ship prior to its departure, while many of the staterooms are more vulnerable.  Not without its dangers, the scheme could be brilliant, since the family would be ashore and the boat would sail before any real loss could be perceived, and after the time when anything could be done about it…in theory.  A scheme is only as good as the schemer and the ones carrying out the scheme, plus the unforeseen variables – such as the sudden death of the brains of the outfit.  Dad dies after the plunder and before the get-away.  The problem becomes: what to do with dad and how to figure out what to do with the goods that the family has stolen from a Mafia Kingpin in the stateroom adjacent to their staging area. And just what is in that steamer chest?

BAGELS AND LOCKS by Gary Young

It’s just your typical octogenarian serial killer comedy. Rose and Jake annoy each other terribly, but Jake would kill for Rose and Rose would kill for Jake.  In fact, they do. But it’s for a reason.  Their daughter has been abducted by a cult and they are seeking revenge.  They are more than a little confused, so the revenge gets a little strange.  But they mean well…

INTERRUPTIONSa life, a death, pizza, dancing and Murphy’s Law

A serio-comic look at the plight of Bob, a recent young widower, dealing with the death and celestial presence of his beloved wife, Linda. He is aided unexpectedly by Zolton, a loony pizza salesman (or is he?) and Nancy, his amorous and concerned sister-in-law. Further attempts to advance his road to recovery are offered by the slightly askew chums at his weekly support group. Bob is given “permission” to grieve, and therefore, get well, as he maneuvers through a succession of “Murphy’s Laws.”

ON HOLD: The MYTH of Male Maturity

A new one-person play, written and originally performed by Gary Young.

Is there such a thing as male maturity? Can you sum up a life and fix everything with one phone call to a pop psychologist? Five characters tackle this while on the telephone, on hold, waiting to speak to a radio pop-psychologist. We gather a bit of insight and have some fun as we nurture this man through his own “stuff.”

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

ON HOLD: the MYTH of Male Maturity

Maturity is not earned.  It is not genetically pre-determined.  It is not a product of upbringing or environment.  In fact, as far as guys are concerned, it isn’t anything at all.  At least, it’s not something to get in the way of having a good time.  We’re here for a reason…or not…but regardless, there are a few basic facts that you can take to the bank:

A nose is a very convenient place to park a finger.  But never do that in traffic while you’re text messaging.

Most food can be eaten if dropped on the floor and retrieved within 5 seconds (long count).  Blowing off the floor stuff is optional.

If your father seems mature, it’s because he needs to be that way in front of you.  But it’s better if he’s not.

Your experiences do matter.  They inform you.  But they don’t have to ruin your fun.  Take for example…well, that’s what the play is about.

Performance dates in Los Angeles have not been set yet, but when they are set, this website will carry discount tickets for the limited run.

…it seems (for ages 3-8)

…it seems, by Gary Young

An illustrated, interactive storybook for children
to be read aloud and acted out by parent and child.

For ages 3-9

IT SEEMS…carries on the oral tradition of the “Ole Sloppincabbage” fables,
created during the Depression.  There was no television and little radio, and people
relied on creativity and  imagination to carry them to places of interest, fun, and awe.
The best of these traditions included the family in an active way,
reading, listening, and creating the stories.

The stories can be a little different, or the same, each time they are read.

It depends on the moment.  Parent and child will enjoy playing with
Mr. Strabinsky (the dog), Ole Sloppincabbage, Luke, and the folks.
The stories are about silly problems for which the characters need a solution.

_____________________________

INTERACTIVE MODES:

1.
Read aloud.

2.
Specific portions are meant to be acted out by the parent and child,
but are written in such a way that the story can complete if the parent

or child are not comfortable acting out the portions.

3.

Solving the problem in the book.  The narrative provides for a
solution by the child.  If no solution comes, or if it is a solution

that does not work, the narrative handles this in a positive way

to insure a good outcome.

32 page hardcover book, with at least six books immediately ready.

_______________________________

SOME TITLES INCLUDE:

How do you get a dog out of a tree?
The popcorn eating contest.
Luke gets stuck in a hole.
Eddy Elephant’s Problem.
Luke finds something strange in his sandwich.
Mr. Strabinsky finds a cricket.
A very sticky Halloween.
Benny Bedpost has a booger.
The big, fat egg.
Peanut butter and Luke.

___________________________
Some of the Characters in …it seems

You! A major contributor to the successful outcome of many of the problems posed in these stories is the person to whom the story is being read. The narrative optionally enables the child to solve the problems in the story.

Ole Sloppincabbage & Luke: Both are dense but loyal and generous.   Always getting into silly predicaments. Luke is married to Phyllis Willis.  Sloppincabbage, whose real name is Willis Willis (Phyllis’ brother), is married to Trudy Streudel Doodle.

Mr. Strabinsky (Sloppincabbage’s dog): wears glasses because he has the eye condition, Strabismus.  Funny, affectionate, smart, a little sneezy.

Mary (age 8):  Sloppincabbage’s daughter, and loyal friend to Luke, very smart, fun-loving, good at solving problems.

Johnny Curbstone (age 8): Luke’s son. Good at listening, but not really plugged in.

Terwilliger: A business man who can sometimes be mean and sometimes be helpful (not always on purpose).

Nate Alwayslate

Bessy Fewclothes

Berkeley Bannanapeel

Waggle; his brother Wiggle

Mable Gatsky, mean lady

plus fifty-five other characters

SELF-HELP: Loss and Found

LOSS AND FOUND: Surviving the Loss of a Young Partner

$14.95 ($23.50 CAN)    ISBN: 0-9715092-0-4     Calabash Press, 272 pages

LOSS AND FOUND, written by
two nationally recognized support leaders.

An uplifting, detailed, and honest self-help book written from both the male and female point of view, by two nationally recognized support leaders, who both experienced the loss of their first spouse early in life.

The loss of a partner can be sad, maddening, confusing, enlightening, liberating, confining, sexy, sexless, frustrating, funny, supernatural, challenging.

Yes, loss can be a real mess.

Loss and Found is for over fifteen million people in this country who lost a partner before fifty, as well as friends, families and counselors who need tools and information about a personal, touchy, difficult subject.

Some issues are universal, but many are unique to a person still building a life. Rediscovering a positive outlook can turn some of the anguish into survival and even into opportunities.

People experience profound changes in behavior, life style, the attitude of friends, family politics, and health. The issues include: coping with illness, family conflicts, the death, the funeral, personal items, friends, hospitals, reclaiming personal identity, and support groups.

Loss and Found shows optimism and hope.

People who lose a partner, often feel that they are the only person in that situation and that they will never be happy.

Through patient healing, you can come back to a sense of yourself as a truly whole person, different than before, but whole, within a new context. You can be happy again. Your partner would be proud of you for winning your battle with survival.

Loss and Found is in two parts, from both the male and female point of view. Kathy is a storyteller and Gary analyzes in a running commentary. You will laugh and cry as Gary and Kathy, two real people with two distinct stories, put the pieces together, sometimes in the wrong order and sometimes right, learning along the way.

Gary and Kathy Young both lost young spouses at an age when people are not supposed to be thinking about such issues, such as illness and death, telling their young children, finding role models, nannies, dating, meeting the right mate, and committing to a different, but affirmative path.

Kathy and Gary Young met in a support group for young widows and widowers, became friends, dated, and married. Life with five children would not be easy, but they learned to preserve memories and lessons in their proper perspective.

Gary and Kathy have discussed grief and recover issues on the Home Show (ABC), the Dale Atkins Show on Family TV, the Marilyn Kagan Show (Disney) and appear on Between the Lines , Barry Kibrick’s acclaimed in-depth, nationally syndicated review of major writers and their books. They have served as consultants for TV shows dealing with young widowhood issues. The TV movie, well, more about that later!
(see SCREENPLAYS: Interruptions)!

A workbook is available at no extra cost.

In use at Colleges throughout the doctoral level, but written clearly on the lay level. An authoritative source of information and support.

“A must-read for anyone experiencing loss. I’ve interviewed over 150 authors to date on my PBS series. I was astonished by this distinctive voice of experience. Gary and Kathy’s wit, wisdom, passion, and insight guide us through a warm and lighthearted journey into love, loss, remorse, then to new love, in a seff-help guide to millions of young people facing loss. The light of hope illuminates the tragedy of loss, even finding humor in the recesses of depression.” Barry Kibrick, BETWEEN THE LINES, PBS

“LOSS AND FOUND fills a void in the bereavement literature for young widows and widowers. The authors candidly, tastefully describe their lives and loss experiences from the moment they learned their spouses were terminal until their lives were joined as a blended family of seven.” Judy Davidson, PhD., director, RENEW Center for Personal Recovery

The readers say:
“Such a moving and insightful aid! I particularly liked the truthful portrayal of both the male and female perspective.”
“A great book. I couldn’t put it down.”
“Your sensitivity, humor and clarity answered many of my questions, some of which I did not even know I had.”
“It was particularly interesting to me to see an honest picture of a man crying.
This will help men who feel that it is wrong to cry.”
“I laughed a lot at the dating experiences. During the roughest time of my life, the book was my therapy and inspiration.”
“I laughed and cried and realized that I am normal, and I am not alone! I could relate to both of your experiences.”
“It’s only been eight months, but I have seen a change in myself and in my life and I owe thanks to you for part of it.”

The updated 2nd Edition will be electronically available at no extra cost for anyone purchasing the first book.
